Customer Reviews

Works nearly as well as traditional floss. Battery failed after 3 months, but customer service was great ORIGINAL REVIEW (five stars)I'm new to water flossing, but traditional (string) flossing has become more problematic for me, so I wanted to check this out. Turns out it works as well as traditional (string) floss. My initial web searches had all pulled up "research" that sounded more like ads for water flossers, but I finally found some NIH articles showing that it does, in fact, work better than string flossing (search for the phrase: NIH water string flossing). So I got this unit myself and was surprised to find first-hand that it works as well and perhaps better than traditional floss--my mouth felt cleaner than it usually does after flossing, and when I followed up with string flossing (to see if it would get anything the water flosser hadn't), all was clear.PROS* Works better than traditional string floss - leaves your teeth cleaner* Has different strength settings so you can adjust* Comes with multiple tips. Most of the ones with brushes say they'll need replacing after 3-6 months, but the one that's just a clear plastic tube seems like it will last longer* Battery charger is magnetic - you set the unit down on the counter, plug in the charger, and then magnetically attach the charger to the front of the unit (I tried attaching it backwards or too high / too low, and it just realigns itself to be correct, so it's super easy)CONS* It's quite big - maybe 10 inches tall and 4 inches at the base (while string floss is teeny tiny), though fortunately it's easy to hold and not heavy* Has a learning curve (probably less of one than string floss, but most of us already know how to string floss)... nothing bad, but it takes a while for it to become a _habit_ to not turn it on outside your mouth (which just shoots water across the room, as you'd expect, and is easy enough to clean up)NEUTRAL* You may have to fill the water reservoir at the bottom a few times during flossing... but this is easy to do, and I'm glad they didn't just make the unit even bigger than it already is* The instructions say you can use the unit in the shower, which would be nice to keep down the mess while you're getting through the learning curve, but I don't like the logistics of refilling the empty reservoir while showering***************UPDATE: three months later, the battery is failing even though I leave this plugged in all the time (except when using it). The battery can no longer make it through a single flossing so I have to switch back to manual floss partway through. In doing so, I found that even though most of the time my mouth feels cleaner with water floss (vs. traditional string floss), there **were** a few pockets where normal flossing again made my gums bleed (a sign that the water floss wasn't getting in there well enough). So I'd suggest that you continue to string-floss on occasion for those benefits. Lowering rating to just 3 stars out of 5 because there's no excuse for a battery failing to hold a charge after just 3 months; otherwise I'd probably do 4 stars.***************UPDATE 2: After another 3 months of flossing 1/2 my mouth with water (until the battery would die) and then switching to string floss, I finally got around to calling customer service. I wish I had done it sooner! Within 15 minutes they had a new unit on its way to me. I did have to read them my serial number to confirm the purchase, and I mailed the old one back (so they can test and see how/why/where it failed). But I've now had the new one for 6 months and the battery is still as good as ever. I still string floss 1-3 times/month so I'll notice if I again start missing anywhere with the water floss. But the water flosser really does a great job and makes my teeth feel fantastic whenever I use it. 5Not worth the money Had it for a couple months and it seems engineered to fail. had an issue with the tip not staying in (we get it, tip jokes). to fix the issue i had to remove the top piece by sliding a small flat head screw driver between it and the body. I placed a small folded piece of paper between the weak plastic spring and it was able to keep the tip while in use. as for th e 1Received a defective unit - very disappointed with poor quality control First review: received it yesterday, and went as per the instructions manual.1) Charge it for at least 4 hours;2) Fill it with water3) Insert tip4) Choose "low" setting... all blue lights working properly, it's a go?5) Oh no... when I wanted to turn it on, NOTHING HAPPENED.Talked today with an Amazon representative who was extremely helpful, they'll be sending a new unit to try it and a return label for the non-working unit.So far, extremely disappointed with with what is "supposed" to be a "top-of-the-line" very expensive product. It speaks terrible about Waterpik's quality control system.(Update Aug 10, 2018). I received the replacement 4 days ago, and the new one works. Except that the nozzle tends to turn when in use, making it more difficult to aim the water stream correctly. The machine is big and bulky, but the water tank is rather small, and even with 2 loads of water it seems to me that my gum cleaning is an unfinished business. And the water suction tube in the tank is small, so when I'm cleaning my mouth, it looses suction even if there is still water in the bottom. Not happy at all with this product, I'm going to return it and ask for a refund. 1My bad apparently. It was initially used (to test it ... If you buy this unit you MUST disconnect the inductance charger from the flosser after charge is complete (nominally 3-4 hours per the manual). I didn't and the battery failed. My bad apparently. It was initially used (to test it out) and then left on charge until my next trip. After 3 weeks, it was dead as the proverbial doornail. The outstanding folks at Waterpik Customer Service informed me that you have to disconnect the charger or the battery WILL fail! I'm guessing that type of charger can't detect when the battery is fully charged to turn itself off. It is not specified in the manual (and it should be in bold print!).. I discovered the issue 1 day after the 30 day return period to Amazon. Amazon Customer Service said call the manufacturer and gave me the number.I wish all customer service was like this when there are product issues. They transshipped a replacement product and are sending me a mailing label (on their dime) to return the non-functioning unit. No hassle, no fuss. I've used corded Waterpiks for years but got tired of packing it with my toothbrush when I travel. I always run the corded unit on max setting (about 100psi per customer service) and portable unit runs anywhere from 45-75 psi. There's a noticeable difference, but it gets the job done when you're on the road. I'm glad I didn't return the unit to Amazon.Only gave four stars since the unit charger will not automatically turn itself off. Now I just have to remember to turn it off after 4 hours (probably some slack there) and ensure it's charged before I travel. However, estimated time to fully charge is only 3-4 hours and if used daily, maybe charge it once a week. I can live with that. 4So advanced you won't feel like a gibbering, drooling baboon (even if you look like one) Pros:PortableThree speeds: slow (dribbling), medium (drooling), high (uncontrollable slobbering)Multiple piks and brushesLong battery lifeEasy to chase siblings out into the hall (old waterpiks with hoses kept water fights confined to bathroom)Cons:Water reservoir is small--constantly needs refillingExtra color-coded piks would be niceComments:In some ways this is a quantum leap over the old-style Waterpik, the kind with the large water reservoir and hose. It's sleeker, more powerful, and it doesn't tether you to a small space. After all, with that old reservoir-and-hose system, when you sprayed your sister with the Waterpik she could just run out into the hall, and there was no way to go after her as she taunted you from around the corner. This new cordless version solves that and a few other problems. Sadly, it introduces some of its own.Namely: because this device is portable, the water reservoir is small. On 'High' speed (just push the power button once, no need to hold it down) it'll pump the reservoir dry in less than a minute (49.73 seconds, to be precise). But because every action has an equal and ridiculous reaction, be warned: on high speed the water will be pouring out of your mouth so fast you'll need to stand near a sink, ideally with a towel wrapped around you. (Don't get me started on mirror splatter.)Even the slower speeds are rather fast, and if you start wandering around the house with this thing on and in your mouth your family members will flee as you stagger their way, mumbling "water iss onleef neef urrg murpfh glurbin!" before you lurch back toward the bathroom like a gibbering, slobbering baboon. Then they will laugh. But hey, what better way to teach your kids that oral hygiene can be fun, right? After all, it's going to take the little ones exactly .34234 seconds to realize that what you've just told them is a "water flossing device" is clearly a fancy squirt gun. (Silly dad!) Believe me, they'll be fighting over who gets to "floss first" hours before bedtime. But ... at least the reservoir empties quickly.Does it work? Yea. Too well. If I designed this, I'd require the user to hold down the power button (instead of just pushing it once), so when you release it the water stops immediately. As it is now, once it's on, it's on. And if you can't find the off button when your mouth starts overflowing you'll invariably panic. Then, without thinking, you'll take the Waterpik (remember, it's still on) out of your mouth to look for the button, which of course causes water to spray everywhere, including in your eyes and up your nose, until you finally manage turn it off. Or the reservoir runs out. (Which--have I mentioned?--happens fast.)And that sound? It's your family, gasping for air.So there you go. The new Waterpik Cordless Advanced Water Flosser. Fun for the whole family. 4Great product - very powerful and portable Upgraded from a cheaper brand product when it broke down. This is powerful and does a great job of cleaning. Some review comments on this product mention the size of the tank as being a detriment. However I disagree for two reasons:- This is a portable device - making the tank any bigger would make it more cumbersome to transport.- The power of the product on high means that as you get more practised at using it, you can get through the job more quicklyOriginally started on about four tankfuls, but now can achieve a perfect result in two.Pros:- Portable- Battery lasts 3 full days of 2 x use before flashing the charge light - no perceptible degradation in power during this time.- Inductive charging means no holes where water can get in, so more likely to last (has already lasted longer than the cheapie I bought previously.- Powerful stream on High (3 pressure settings)- Swivel head so you don't have to dribble all over the unitCons:- No notable cons to this product. 5Does it work in perfect conditions? Yes, but not from a consumer practical perspective. This is complicated. On the one hand when the unit works.... I feel like it works really well. You will find there is a tradeoff for going with this smaller cordless unit. On the one hand you can use it in the shower. It is easy to pack and it takes up much less space. On the other hand it is not quite as powerful as some of the other models. The water tank is small and requires refills for each use if you want to properly clean and the unit runs on a battery.I am giving this unit 2 stars for 1 primary reason. There is a serious design flaw with the battery of this model. They cut corners on probably the 2nd post important part of the unit (after the motor). The battery is very cheap and requires special attention if you want to keep your unit functioning properly.First if you bother to read through the manual which I assume most people don't, you will see a small bit of text which tells you to charge the unit for 8 hours before you ever use it. The instructions also include text which specifically says do not let the battery run all the way out. However, what the instructions or anything provided within the unit DOESN'T tell you is if you over charge the unit... You basically destroy the battery and suddenly it will only have enough charge for 2min of use max.So to put things in perspective in a very common scenario... Lets say you are using the unit at the end of the night in your routine before bed.... You see the light about the low battery, you attach the charger to the unit.... Now apparently you are only supposed to charge the unit for 3-4hrs max. So what do you do? Do you put the charger on? In which case the over charging WILL destroy the battery? or do you not charge the unit and risk "waiting" for another time when you can monitor the unit while you charge it. Remember letting the battery lose all of its charge will also ruin the battery. So in short from a practical perspective the design is very poor. The unit does not have a way of detecting when the battery is charged and disable charging. If you leave the charger on the unit you will ruin the waterpik in less than a week.To me this is an unacceptable failure. I have a hard time believing no one brought up the terrible battery when they were discussing the unit and I am sure some Waterpik exec said "Nope" for "cost saving reasons", but that person is an idiot. This model is not worth it from a practical perspective.2Charged it for 4 hours as recommended. Unit worked once and when my spouse went ...Ordered this "Advanced" Cordless Waterpik based on the previous reviews. Charged it as stated in the manual. It worked a few times and then started working sometimes even when charged. When it "played dead" we charged it again (blue charging lite flashing) After a few hours the blue light would go out and it appeared to be charged. May only work a couple times and then not work even though it said it was charged, Put up with these intermittent problems for 4 months before the unit got so hot when charging that you couldn't touch it!Called Waterpik Customer Service who didn't doubt we had these problems with the unit and offered right away to send out a new replacement unit. Received new replacement unit on 12/31/16. Charged it for 4 hours as recommended. Unit worked once and when my spouse went to use it later the same day, it was dead with the blue light flashing indicating it needed charging. Charged it for several hours and all the time, the flashing blue charging light kept blinking. Since the blue light is always flashing when you go to use it, you don't know if it's dead or not.Called Waterpik Customer Service back again on 1/11/17 to report that the second new unit was defective - once again a charging problem. Since we've received 2 brand new defective products and spent $99.99 for what is obviously a defective charging system, we demanded our money back. Customer Service agent put me on hold and came back to inform me that they couldn't do that because the product was past it's "14-Day" Money Back return policy limit.Next, the agent referred me to the outside of the box where it states they have a 14-Day "Healthier Gums" guarantee or your money back. It states, "Healthier gums guaranteed or your money back." However, the new units have a 2-Year defective product warranty, which the company refused to honor. I told her I was well within the 14-day limit since I just received the 2nd new unit on 12/31/16 and it was now 1/11/17 and I wasn't asking them to honor a "healthier gums" warranty, but their 2-year defective product guarantee. She informed me that I couldn't "transfer" the 14-day warranty to the 2nd new unit, since I bought the original unit in August 2016.Bottom line: Waterpik knows they have a charging system problem with this magnetic charger attachment and/or battery issues, but will not honor their 2-year defective product guarantee. It appears that management has instructed the Customer Service agents that nobody gets a refund on their purchase for a defective product...only if they can prove they don't have "healthier" gums within 2 weeks of using their product! They did agree to send me a 3rd new unit which will take 7 - 10 business days to arrive along with a return mailing label for the 2nd defective unit. So, the company's solution to keeping your money is to keep producing and selling defective products apparently until you stop complaining!1READ THE OTHER AMAZON REVIEWS ALSO! I researched all brands and even after reading the 5 star (but still negative) Amazon reviews, I still bought this and I am glad I did. I called Water Pik and they confirmed I would kill the battery if left it on, so I now charge after every use and ONLY when I home home to watch the charger light go out. After a month I learned to use on high and just fill 4 times, once front, then back, top & bottom. Beats having a tank. Other than TERRIBLE battery design, biggest complaint is that it is not designed to fully drain out of the plug hole (raised higher inside than the water housing). Pulling the bottom off every time is ridiculous. I just shake it, then set on a paper towel because it leaks for awhile, and leave the plug open to air dry. 4Not for everyday useI have switched from floss to using a waterpik daily. For that purpose at home, I use the standard, corded version which has good power and is, in general, easier to use. I bought this model for travel and that is the only time I will be using it. The water stream has far less power and therefore does not provide the same gum massage or between-teeth-cleaning benefit as the corded model. I do like the results, vs floss, from regular use of the corded model and will keep this unit only for trips.3Battery Problem: SOLVED! This wireless Waterpik is easy and convenient to use. A few weeks ago the battery stopped holding a charge. I'd use it for less than a minute and it would be dead. Today I called Waterpik customer service and was advised to disconnect charger from device then hold in power button for 10 seconds then release. Alex at Waterpik customer service said that this would rest the battery. She advised to charge for 6 hours and report back to her whether that solved the problem. It did! Very pleased with the solution. 5Great product which saved me from major gum surgery, but.....It has one big flaw!I purchased this advanced cordless model for two reasons:1. I didn't want a big bulky unit with tubes and wires cluttering my bathroom2. Needed a waterpik that could be used while travellingThis is a truly fantastic product which ultimately sorted out my gum disease and prevented major gum surgery. My periodontist was so amazed when I saw him and did a double take when he read in the file that I had last seen him 6 months previously! He hardly had any work to doI have been using this since the beginning of October 2017The first time I used it, it alternated between tickling my gums and feeling like there were needles attacking my mouth!I couldn't finish my whole mouth due to this and my gums were bleeding in a few placesI was unprepared for the PULSING water as I assumed it was just a steady stream of waterOne needs to persevere, as your mouth needs to get used to the waterpik sensations. It took about a week to get used to it and during this time my gums still bled.Over time, the bleeding got less and less and eventually stopped altogether as did my swollen gumsFirst ImpressionsIt was bit bulkier than it looks in the picturesI had to start on the LOW setting as the water pressure is quite strongAfter a month, I have moved to MEDIUM and am now on HIGHSome reviews have mentioned that they feel that the pressure is not strong enough, but it seems that the measure is compared to the plug in model which is understandably more powerfulHaving said that, I don't think that I personally could handle more pressure as on occasion, if one points the nozzle incorrectly on the gums, it still can feel like needles on the gums but this is very rare (The pressure of this portable model is approximately 75psi)The little flap where you fill the reservoir doesn't seem to be too tight when you first use it, but it works like a charm and water doesn't leak outThe buttons are well positioned and one doesn't push them by mistakeAt first, it was quite difficult to do the inside of my teeth, until I realised that the nozzle swivels, which made all the differenceIn terms of travelling, it is supplied with a grey plastic "blocker" which is inserted in place of the nozzle. This prevents residual water from leaking outIt is quite difficult to empty ALL the water out of it, so when travelling, ensure that it is put in a Ziploc bag as there will be a small amount of water that will leak outI use dental floss before using the waterpik. There is no special reason for this, other than I am used to using dental floss anyway and feel that this assists in removing plaque from the sides of the teethThe reservoir holds a fair amount of water (I suppose that there has to be a balance between size and capacity)I fill up between 3 or 4 times during a session which is very easy to doAlthough there are third party generic hard cases available, it would be nice if Waterpik had a custom hard case as an option which would be larger at one end and narrower at the other end so as not to cause unnecessary bulk in your suitcase.A hard case is a necessity as otherwise the buttons will be pressed and the likelihood of the unit being cracked or broken when you take it out of your suitcase is quite highPROSPortableEfficientWireless charging (more on that below)Does a fantastic job3 pressure levelsErgonomic fit to your handCONSNo proper hard caseUnintelligent battery - big issueUnable to empty it completely so a small amount of water leaks out when travellingBIG FLAW!!!!The reason for only four stars is that the battery is very old technology in that if you charge it for more than four hours, the battery overcharges and will no longer hold a charge which renders the Waterpik uselessOne would expect that with the technology available today, the battery shouldn't be a problem, but it isIt is mentioned in the user manual, but it is not highlighted and the consequences are not explainedWaterpik really need to address this issue as it has the potential to damage their reputationIt is worth paying a few dollars extra not to have this issueTo charge the unit, place the magnetic charger on the body near the bottom (the charger is magnetised and will automatically attach to the correct spot) and it starts charging, BUT you have to remember to remove the charger as soon as its charged (about four hours), which is not convenient at allCONCLUSIONDespite the battery/charging issue, I think that this is a fantastic product but would ONLY recommend it if you are willing to put up with and manage the charging of itIt would really be nice if Waterpik would comment and clarify the issue4Do not buy- Junk! This product stopped working 34 days after purchasing. 4 days after return window closed! Junk!!! 1You ll think you just left the Dentist. I held off until my first visit back to the dentist to review this. This was originally recommended by the same Dentist, and I m happy to report that it went very well. I knew it would though because my teeth had never felt better. Cleaning was a breeze and my gums were healthier than they d been in in years. My Dentist did have 2 pointers before starting. One was to use it in the shower. Great idea. The reservoir is small and takes 4 refills to do a complete cleaning. It eliminates the mess, the warm water is better than cold, and added to your morning shower makes it an easy routine. Second recommendation was to use the low pressure mode. Apparently some people have trouble in the highest of 3 speeds but it wasn t an issue with me.The no-plug in magnet charger is genius.I travel a lot and always bring it with me. The battery is good for several days so you probably don t need the charger unless you re going away for more than a few days.I ve only used the one bent straw like tip, never even tried the rest, this was fine for me.I did see a question about adding mouth wash. Really no need it will clean your teeth just fine without it and probably not good for the pump anyway. If you brush first with a good mild abrasive toothpaste (like Arm and Hammer), rinse with the flosser and then use a mouthwash afterwards you ll think you just left the dentist. It s that good. Worth all 5 stars for sure.UPDATE: After almost exactly 12 months it up and died. I think the Lithium battery died as it was unable to hold a charge. The battery is not replaceable (I tried), so I am going to lower my rating to a 3-star, yes it was a good tool, but 12 months use is not worth a 5-star. 3
