Review from a Dental Assistant I am so glad Tom's of Maine now makes a Rapid Relief Sensitive toothpaste. Prior to this, I was using the Whole Care toothpaste which is great, but doesn't address a targeted concern. I am a dental assistant so I have a lot of experience both work related and personal when it comes to tooth sensitivity. I like that this toothpaste came with a little pamphlet inside explaining what it is that causes it, as well as how this toothpaste addresses the issue. So basically the dentin (soft tissue of the tooth) that's usually covered by your gums is exposed. There's a number of things that can cause this to happen ranging from improper brushing, to bruxisim (teeth grinding). It causes recession (loss of gingiva) and exposes the dentin. The dentin has a bunch of teeny tiny holes that lead to the pulp (nerve of your tooth), and when things touch the dentin and get in those holes it causes sensitivity and sometimes pain. Now, unfortunately we can't re-grow our gingiva so we have to treat it as best we can. Some extreme cases patients will have a gingival graft which is basically a transplant where they will graft gum tissue to the exposed dentin to cover it back up again. For less extreme cases, the dentist will prescribe a fluoride toothpaste that has a high content of Potassium Nitrate. You will find these in toothpastes that directly target tooth sensitivity (Sensodyne, etc...). Tom's makes a version of sensitive toothpaste that contains Potassium Nitrate, here is the link to check it out on Amazon: Tom's Of Maine, Toothpaste, Sensitive, Antiplaque, Soothing Mint, 4 oz The potassium nitrate basically has an anesthetic effect where it numbs the area so you don't experience the sensitivity. This Rapid Relief says it actually creates a barrier, overtime, to plug the microscopic holes in the dentin. It will be interesting to see how long that takes, or if it even does anything. So far I have been using this toothpaste for a week and if I touch the exposed dentin I currently have, it is still very sensitive and slightly painful. This purchase includes TWO of the Rapid Relief Sensitive toothpastes, so it's a good deal. I hope they start selling this formula in stores, along with the other Tom's toothpastes. As far as tips I have for patients using this toothpaste, or any for sensitive teeth:* Make sure to brush for a minimum of one minute* Make sure you brush the areas where your teeth meet your gums, your gums are important too!* When you are done brushing, spit out the toothpaste and DO NOT RINSE your mouth. This removes the coating the toothpaste leaves over your teeth and basically prevents the toothpaste from doing what it's supposed to do.* After brushing, wait a minimum of ten minutes before eating or drinking anything* In-between brushing you can take a small amount of this toothpaste on your finger and gently rub the area that's causing sensitivity. Again, this should be done for up to a minute if possible, and do not rinse, eat or drink for at least ten minutes afterwards. As always, makes sure you get a regular dental check-up at least once a year. If you have any questions please comment below, but I am NOT a doctor and cannot diagnose you and your symptoms. Comments should be questions about this specific toothpaste. I will do my best to answer them for you.*UPDATE*I've been using this toothpaste twice daily (morning and evening) for a month. This toothpaste has helped with eating and drinking cold items within the first week of use. Now, after four weeks of consistent use, it has also helped with sensitivity to touch. Before, the bristles of my toothbrush would cause discomfort so I would brush really slow and gentle in the area with recession/exposed dentin. Now I can brush normal and even when I touch the area with my finger and rub up and down there is NO PAIN (previously if I did this it would send what felt like lightning bolts of pain shooting through the area). This toothpaste really does seem to create a barrier by plugging the holes in the dentin instead of just numbing the area. I will definitely continue to purchase this toothpaste because it works miracles. 5Gets to the root of the problem. I don't have sensitive teeth, but I bought this product because I love Tom's of Maine toothpaste. So far I've tried 8 different kinds including Simply White, Whole Care, Luminous White, and Enamel Strength. This product solves the problem of sensitive teeth the way it should. Other toothpastes just numb the pain which doesn't make sense. It simply ignores a serious problem. You wouldn't treat a broken arm by just numbing the pain and then going about your day. This toothpaste seals the microscopic tubules in exposed dentin with arginine and calcium carbonate. Arginine is the first ingredient on the list. By sealing the pathways to tooth nerves, you are solving the problem of sensitive teeth by getting to the root of the problem. 5Great sensitivity toothpaste, but please get rid of the SLS in your products! This is the first sensitivity toothpaste I've used and I find that it works really well. My sensitivity has decreased significantly. I have always been a big fan of Tom's products, but I wish that the company would remove sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) from its toothpastes. My kids have been using Tom's, but I'm ready to make a switch because they continue to use SLS as an ingredient. 4Has helped my senitive teeth I bought this to help with tooth sensitivity I was having as a negative reaction to an Ayurvedic toothpaste I had been using for 3 months. My teeth would ache when I'd eat, but also if I simply breathed in cool air through my mouth. It took about 2 to 3 uses of this Tom's toothpaste for the sensitivity to be noticeably reduced. My teeth will only hurt on occasion now, a month after buying this paste. My hope is that in another month, the sensitivity will go away entirely. 5Awesome ProductI have semi transparent teeth. I've gone to the dentist and they tell me my teeth aren't rotting out, it's just how I'm made. I also have sensitivity in some areas of my teeth. I read a review on this toothpaste and decided to give it a try and I couldn't be happier. I use an electric toothbrush and I don't feel the sensitivity any more. Also, my transparency is starting to fill in, which sounds crazy but there is actually a noticeable difference. I'm using ACT mouthwash with it as well, which has the fluoride in it that the toothpaste does not have. Sometimes, I'll mix a little of the fluoride toothpaste to Tom's and that works just fine. I'm super happy with this product and I'm just hoping in a few months from now I'll see even more of a dramatic difference. Thank you Tom's!5A toothpaste that works and benefits your health. Tom's toothpaste for sensitive teeth is the best that I have found from among all the other brands that I have tried. It even does a great job in whitening my teeth as well. Though Tom's does not mention this, but their sensitive tooth brand has an ingredient, L-Arginine, that can be absorbed through the mouth's mucosa and have beneficial effects on the circulatory system by increasing Nitric Oxide. I will definitely keep using Tom's toothpaste for sensitive teeth because it works, and it's the only brand of Tom's that has the L-Arginine. 5This toothpaste gives my teeth a calming reset. I am SO GRATEFUL for it! I am a head & neck cancer surviver of 5 years. I don't know if it's related to the radiation or something else, but my teeth have started being really sensitive in the last year. I can't eat nuts or crunchy salad anymore without sharp pain. This toothpaste gives my teeth a calming reset. I am SO GRATEFUL for it! 5Does NOT Work I usually LOVE Tom's of Maine and other natural products. But this one is a HUGE disappointment.I have some sensitive teeth, and they are helped by various "sensitive teeth" toothpastes. Unfortunately this one does NOT work for me AT ALL. I've tried it for many months, several times, over the last several years... and my teeth always get more and more and more sensitive until I'm dreading eating or drinking or brushing.Somehow, this toothpaste just gets it all wrong. 1Its working Its working. There was another toothpaste that made my teeth sensitive and now I'm trying this to undo that damage. Its a tad too minty and 'cooling' for sensitive teeth to cold but tolerable and not a burny mint as some can be. Its working. It has been about two weeks and I have to be 'careful' with cold but can do it where I couldn't before. Funny how that creeks up on you then bam, your teeth hurt. I take excellent care of my teeth as a fyi. I brush at least twice a day, morning and night and sometimes before I go out someplace. But judging this is based pretty much on using it twice a day. I'm happy with it. 4CAUSES PAIN TO USE I bought this toothpaste because I have very sensitive gums and it's marketed as natural and for sensitive mouths to offer relief. I had to just throw both boxes away because the toothpaste caused a lot of stinging and pain in my mouth every time I used it. I don't know what they put in this but it should not be for sensitive gums or for relief - it is anything but relief! I tried it several times to make sure it was the toothpaste and not just me. And every time it really hurt!!! Waste of money! 1this is a good one to tryI was advised by a dentist to use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, as I have a couple of sensitive spots. As I researched, I found that there are two types of toothpaste which address sensitivity: One type uses a "desensitizing" agent and another uses minerals to "fill in" or "strengthen" sensitive spots by "sticking" to the enamel in those places. This toothpaste is the latter kind. So, if you know that your sensitive teeth situation is having some weak spots/sensitive spots on your teeth, this is a good one to try. I have found that it is more effective for me than those sensitive teeth toothpaste that "desensitize". Warning: There is no fluoride in this. I still use it for my brushing one or two times a day, and use a fluoride toothpaste (another Tom's of Maine favorite) for other times I brush.5Helped with sensitivity, but abrasiveness hurt my gums So the first couple of times I tried this toothpaste I actually used it to brush my teeth, which was a mistake - my gums and tongue felt lightly sandpapered. However, I'd read on the side of the package that you can place a bit of the paste directly onto problem areas and leave it there for quicker results. That was a lot easier, but after a while it started bothering me too much to even tolerate that, even moving it around that much created too much abrasion. While it DID help with the sensitivity a lot, I've had to stop using this paste. It's possible that it's not the abrasive but an allergy of some kind, but I've never had a reaction to any other toothpaste. 3product causes a burning sensation in mouth, doesn t make mouth feel clean, if you have sensitive skin avoid this product in the past few months, my body has gone haywire and i suddenly have a bunch of allergies, most of which present themselves as contact dermatitis/severe itching and scratching/red rashes etc. on my allowed list the children s gel was listed, so i ordered that. not a huge fan of the taste, but that s another story...after i went to the dentist recently, i had some very sensitive areas, but not cavities. i ordered this because i know tom s is more natural and i was doing ok with the other gel. first off, the mint flavor was absolutely too astringent and off-putting, and i have always used mint toothpastes. it also didn t feel as though my mouth actually felt clean, just sort of like it burned. i realized after a couple times of using it that the area all around my mouth, which obviously gets toothpaste on it while brushing and for me, at least, remains there until i am ready to rinse, was turning bright red, as though my skin had been burned by the toothpaste. i immediately stopped using it and the redness dissipated. now i have 2 tubes of unusable toothpaste. 1Contains 8% Arginine, Works very well on my sensitive teethLike many of the reviewers here, I used potassium nitrate toothpastes, such as Sensodyne, for years with very little relief, if any at all. Then I heard about toothpastes with arginine and calcium carbonate that plug the tiny pores in our teeth to help prevent pain. The problem was finding them in the US. I've been ordering it from England and have had good success with this type of toothpaste. Now Toms of Maine is offering this same type of product here, so I decided to try it.I contacted the company to ask how much arginine was in it, so I would know how it compared to my other brand. Like the other brand, Toms of Maine Rapid Relief contains 8% arginine.I've been using Toms for about a month now with good results. The taste is very fresh and I like it. It's a little chalkier than standard toothpaste, but I'm okay with that. With this type of toothpaste, I can rub a little onto my teeth with my finger for quick relief, but with regular use I stay pain free.I would definitely recommend this toothpaste to anyone with sensitive teeth.5
