Saves you money. So I got this shaving razor and I am very pleased! It is sturdy and very functional. I don't think I will ever switch back to normal razors. This razor saves money switching from modern razors to this razor. I spent $24 on a modern razor with spending and additional $16 dollars on razor blades every two months. That's is $72 every 6 months. With this razor, I spent $20 dollars on the razor itself, $7 on replacement blades and $16 on a brush, soap and dish combo. That is $43 dollars. This has lasted me 6 months with a replacement soap of an additional 4 dollars. That's is a saving a 27 dollars from a modern razor. I would suggest this for the man who loves old time traditions. The only con is that YOU WILL CUT YOURSELF! It's completely unavoidable. It will happen. Just learn to shave properly from YouTube and you will be okay! Overall a great product. 5Very happy with this razor! So, I'm a very picky shopper. I can spend hours, days, weeks, months, researching stuff before I'll make a purchase.I became interested in a straight razor when I noticed a buddy of mine had one. He told me he loved his and had payed $100+ for it.So I started my research. If I was gonna get one, I didn't want to initially invest $100+ into a razor I may not like or even end up using. I had never used one before so I was a little intimidated taking a super sharp single edge razor blade to my face.I watched a bunch of videos online to get an idea of the techniques used. I'm very good with my hands so I decided what the heck I'll give it a try. I wanted something that wouldn't break the bank, but at the same time wasn't a total piece of garbage. After searching all the razors online, I decided to go with one that uses the disposable blades. My search led me to this Parker. I read all the reviews and was a little hesitant because there were some negative ones, but after comparing the others I decided on this one.I recieved it in a little black box with a red velvet liner and it came with the 5 individually wrapped blades. I immediately loaded one up and tried it. I was presently surprised I got through a full shave and didn't even nick myself. It was a little nerve racking around my lips, but I just took my time.I'm very pleased with the quality, I mean for $20 bucks what more can you ask for. I actually really enjoy using it compared to just shaving with a modern multiple blade safety razor. I actually look forward to shaving now, it adds this weird gratifying twist.Anyway, I'm hooked. I won't be leaving home without my Parker razor now. I can now justify spending $100+ for one, but quite frankly, I'm very happy with this razor and I don't see my self buying a different one anytime soon.Cheers,JEREMY 5Super-sharp, but works well After being frustrated with paying so much for razor cartridges, I decided to take the plunge into the world of straight razor shaving. I started with this shavette. There are a few things I can say right off the bat:1.) With a new blade, this thing is sharp! Don't underestimate the sharpness. Go slowly, and be controlled. Expect probably 20 minutes for that first shave. You'll get faster, but you don't want to carve up your face.2.) Use the right kind of shaving cream. I started by using the gel I was using with cartridges, and that was a mistake. I switched to the entry-level Van Der Hagen shave set, and have been pretty happy with that. Using a real shaving soap is essential to a safe and close shave.3.) The edges of this thing are sharp. I'm not taking about the cutting edge here, which is certainly sharp, I'm talking about the square edges of the blade. It wasn't until I switched to a real straight razor with a rounded point that I realized how sharp those edges are. Don't let those edges dig in, or you'll end up with a cut.4.) I was getting about 5-7 shaves out of a single blade before I started feeling pulling and tugging. I switched to a new blade and the problem was gone. There is a downside to this, however. A fresh blade is almost TOO sharp, so you have to be careful. At around 3 shaves, it's just right. There is definitely a cycle of life to each blade. On the plus side, you don't have to worry about stropping or honing, you just throw away or recycle the tiny steel blade and move on. It's really pretty nice.Even though I've switched to straight razors (the shave is a bit more predictable and comfortable with a real straight), I think the shavette is a reasonable entry into single-edge shaving, and I still use mine occassionally. Just make sure to get some real shaving cream, and take it slow! 3Amazing Razor I'm just getting started with using a straight razor but I absolutely cannot believe the difference. First of all, it's insane that the big companies that sell the disposable razors can sell them at the price they can, considering that a straight razor gives you a much better (albeit dangerous) shave at an insanely lower price. Whatever. At any rate, I saw a bunch of youtube videos by fancy barbers giving these amazing shaves with straight razors, so being a renaissance man and all I decided to try to learn myself. I searched and searched on Amazon to find the best one for someone who's just getting started, at an affordable price. I found this model, and after reading laboriously through the reviews, I decided to give it a try.I got it in the mail and after watching 2-3, maybe even 4 hours of video I was ready to give it a shot. I took a really hot shower and used tons of lather and success...kind of. I nicked myself a lot and had quite a few cuts, but aside from that, the shave was legit! I gave it a couple more tries over the next few weeks and got much better at my technique. But THEN. Oh, but then. My friend gave me a tip his barber gave him about putting the tiniest bit of tea tree oil on the razor to prevent razor bumps and to moisturize skin, and wow--that was the golden trick. Disclaimer--make sure your technique is a little bit better than mine was when I started, cuts and tea tree oil don't feel the best on your face at 7am. I tried using TreeActiv+ Tea Tree Oil Acne Solution for Advanced Acne Treatment - All Natural Acne Spot Treatment - Blemishes Gone or Your Money Back! and it worked really well. I put just a drop or two on the razor with a towel, and the next day I noticed I had no razor bumps. Like zero. I then used it as an aftershave the following day, and it really worked for me. The smell isn't very strong so if you like an aftershave with a kick, I recommend using some cologne.Update: My girlfriend gave me this TreeActiv Anti Acne & Rosacea Treatment Sulfur Mask Plus Rhassoul, Bentonite Clay Mask with Witch Hazel & Aloe Vera - Refreshing Lemon Scent (1 Jar) to use as a face scrub a couple of days a week and its making my shave easier on my skin, and my skin really clear. I've almost got a baby face now. I recommend all of these products. 5Not all that.... Product manufactured in India under very low, if any craftsmanship skills, yet the product box states "Craftsmanship realms from traditional shaving couture". Not for this razor. Stainless steel quality being used is of low grade and very thin. Not even close by far to any good quality American or German stainless steel. None at all Quality Control at production and it shows clearly on the rivets used. Rivets used are copper hollowed and rip and do not hold tightness at pressing during manufacturing thus creating uneven closures at surfaces being jointed. This is the case of the rivets at the scales. There was trace of Burr along the edge of the tang. Obviously a sign of poor finish manufacturing quality. Rivets that hold the blade in place are decent and perhaps will stand the test of use since they really serve no specific function but to hold the blade in place. This item retails for around $21.00 when in reality it should somewhere in between $10.00 to $13.00 including tax. 3Never going back! First time straight razor user and never tried safety. Just wanted to put it out there that you might not cut yourself so don't be scared.Like most I was a little worried but on my first go I shaved with and against the grain without one cut. It almost instantly felt very intuitive. I have picked up some soap but I was anxious to try so i had this first experience using my girlfriends fancy lady gel :) I'm pretty sure I'm hooked. I have pretty tough skin though. I typically shave without mirror in in the shower and can shave with just water if need be so I'm sure that makes a difference in my experience.(thick course hair) Only one shave so no real advice but I went against how-to advice and used my right hand for both sides and i think i will continue doing this. More control and finesse to me. 5Great Razor I have tried to shave with a straight razor in the past. It didn't end well, so I went back to my safety razor. I was walking through a mens store the other day, and saw straight razors, and I guess I didn't remember the experience being too bad, and I wanted to try again.Fast forward to the razor. I knew I didn't want to pay the price of the "non-replaceable blade" style. I researched the razors available and came across the Parker SR1. I ordered it, and have been very impressed with the razor. Of course I can only compare it to my cheap cheap cheap straight razor that I tried before, but it has more heft than my last model, and is very well balanced. The arm stays where ever you put it, and the blade does a great job. I shopped locally for replacement blades, and found the average price to be about $2.50 for 5 of them. Of course how long a blade lasts depends on your beard, and how often you shave.I would love to say, I got this razor, and now I have mastered the art of straight razor shaving. That would be a lie. Actually I have used the razor a number of times, and have cut myself every time. The thing I've learned with SR's, is that the cuts aren't like the nicks I've gotten with safety razors and the like. These are cuts. They aren't serious, or deep, but they are certainly noticeable. There are a number of great websites that I'm reading to increase my knowledge.Short version, the razor does a great job. It works especially well for someone that either already knows how to shave well with a SR, or for someone who wants to learn, but doesn't want to sink a ton of money into it until they are certain that it is for them. 4SCAM I ordered the stainless steel shavette.... it clearly states both blade and handle are SS in the description. The handle/scales are cheap plastic.....silver colored..... Even the blade holder is cheap, and the rivets are horrible. This is a whole SCAM and just to top it off: they do not accept returns....(I did NOT even attempt to use it). But it's also off center so closing is not easy...... 1Initial thoughts are mixed. My initial review is going to be at three stars for this reason. The piece that holds the blade is great. Stainless steel and machined well. Holds the blade securely. However, the handle portion that covers the blade when not in use is plastic and plated in a silver/chrome colored material. It is also riveted. Sometimes riveted plastic doesn't hold up well. Past experience with items treated this way (car emblems and such) has proven flakey (literally). I will update after it gets used for a couple of weeks. Stay tuned.Update!Ok so upon closer examination, the razor sheath or whatever I would call it, is not plastic. It just looks that way at first. It is however not really made great. You can see inside there is some slag or some type of metal runoff from manufacturing. It doesn't affect the shave at all, but my eyes are drawn to it now. It is pretty easy to use but make sure you follow tried and true methods of using one as to not cut yourself. There are plenty of videos online. Updated product review is now 4 stars. 4First Straight Razor Wanted to wait a bit while testing out his product. 3 months in and I must say, very satisfied. Looks great maintains shine and fits well in your hand. First time EVER trying a straight razor. Have a beard but use it for lining it up on the cheeks and neck. First time cut the hell out of my self. Tips: pull skin at one end before shaving, press lightly blade is sharp, and angle the blad in that sweet spot so it's flowing with the cheek rather then scraping. Anyways once my skin toughened up and I picked up some torythm, it works like a charm! After shave lotion, and clear shaving cream make the task complete. 4
