Customer Reviews

Most Disappointing Purchase To Date I bought this razor after reading so many positive reviews on Amazon and sustainability related blogs. Everyone ranked Merkur at the top, so I thought that I would take the chance and finally invest a safety razor I hoped would last me a lifetime. The first time I used this razor, I was very excited. I got a fairly close shave with some minor difficulties, but I figured they were learning curves that I would work out later.HOWEVER, when I went back to shave my legs for a second and third time, I had a horrible experience. The razor did not lock into place and continued to spin around the screw and I was worried that it would fall apart in the shower. At one point, the head of the razor shifted mid-stroke and I cut myself badly. Also, I bought this product thinking it would last me years, but the top is already beginning to show signs of rust even though I took it apart and dried it immediately after showering and did not leave it in the shower between shaves.I am extremely disappointed that I spent $30 on a product only to switched back to a cheap, disposable, plastic razor a few weeks later. I will not be recommending your products any time soon, and I will search for a new safety razor elsewhere. 1Merkur 25c I've been using a Merkur 34c closed comb for the past 6 months, perfecting my technique and unlearning 40 years of shaving with various iterations of cartridge razors. I've also been using several highly touted and revered shaving creams and soaps during this same period. I ordered the 25c open comb to see if there was a better shave to be had, even though the 34c did a great job compared to my old cartridge razors. Following my usual procedure I lather in a scuttle and apply to my face with a Parker brush. The first couple of strokes with the 25c I thought I was doing something wrong, it didn't feel the same as shaves with my old 34c. I stopped and rechecked my angle and listened for audible feedback which I usually get. Everything seemed ok but yet it felt very different. Anyhow I finished the first pass and rinsed, wow what a shave for just the first pass with the grain. Never had a first pass this smooth before. Relathered for pass number 2 across the grain. By the time I had finished this pass I debated the need for a 3rd pass, my face was that smooth. I did have to do several small clean ups but nothing compared to any other razor I've ever used. All I can say is if you're debating buying the 25c, don't hesitate. Not aggressive, very smooth and great feedback through the handle. It's great. Even being an open comb razor it it vppery smooth and easy to use. My 34c will now be my backup razor. The 25c will be my daily razor. 5Perfect German Quality - Sorry Gillette, #GetWokeGoBroke Thank you Gillette for motivating me to a better shave. There is nothing like a real shave & super close with a nice heavy & quality made product.Soligen makes a perfect blade for this shaver. $10 worth of blades will last me a year at least! 5Ladies, go for it! So happy I found this product. First and foremost I am a 24yo female. I never knew these things existed and Im so happy to know now. I enjoy the economical aspect most, makes me feel good to know Ive made a step in limiting my carbon footprint, and lastly I do my best to do things with intention and with this type of razor I am forced to do so. Im happy it came w a cheap enough blade I got to practice w until my variety set comes in. Ive already burned this blade out shaving my entire body twice haha. It was surprisingly easy to learn (I did watch some youtube articles but it wasnt nearly as daunting as everyone hyped it up to be.) It does get tricky letting the weight of the razor do its thing when youre upside down in an unlikely angle shaving your legs but if youre careful enough the worst that can happen is a mild burn. The razor itself is very well made and am happy to have it as a new addition to my lifestyle. 5BUY THIS RAZOR IMMEDIATELY I have very sensitive skin and have been dealing with razor burn for a little over 10 years. No amount of special shaving cream or special multi-blade razors helped with it, and it got to the point that I pretty much stopped shaving my legs unless it was ABSOLUTELY necessary. Then I read an article on Buzzfeed about the benefit of these razors on not only your skin, but the environment, and I figured "What the heck. I've tried everything else, let's give it a go." I watched one how-to video to make sure I wouldn't amputate myself, then just went for it. WOOOOOOOOOOW. I wish I had known about these a decade ago. Perfect shave right out of the gate. No knicks, no cuts. NO RAZOR BURN. Like AT ALL. Smooth, close shave, cost effective, and environmentally friendly? Don't think, just buy. Best purchase I have made on Amazon in pretty much forever. 5Cheaply Made Had razor in a toiletry bag, was always well taken care of and never dropped. Screw attachment became detached from the top, very poor shouldering or glue holding it in place. Product is now unusable. Cheaply made, do not buy. 1CALLING ALL LADIES, THIS IS A REASONABLY PRICED, QUALITY DOUBLE EDGE RAZOR Okay ladies out there, I'm speaking to you. These aren't only for guys anymore. I will not pay hard earned money on rediculously high priced pieces of plastic, silly lubricating strip with single, double, triple or quadruple semi-sharp blades made in Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Mexico or any third world country!I hate shaving! Unlike many women, I must shave daily, otherwise, I'd need to drag the string trimmer and blower into the bathroom. My legs are long and extremely difficult to shave. I can easily go through two or three so-called quality, name brand disposable razors. I even use men's disposable razors with half a can of Barbasol. Now you know why I hate shaving. When I began shaving, I would sneak my father's butterfly razor into the shower. I'll not quote my father's response, as this is a family friendly site. I'll only say, he was not happy when he began shaving with a dull blade.I decided to try both a butterfly and a three piece double edge razor. This razor is fantastic! Add Feather double edge blades, and you'll be amazed at the results. You will effortlessly remove the dreaded stubble for a fraction of the cost of disposable razors. You can purchase large quantities of blades for very little cost here on Amazon, or in ebay. There is absolutely no reason to fear shaving with a double edge razor and Feather or, any other quality double edge blade. You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose. 4The Name of the Game is "Your Mileage May Vary." It Serves Me Well, but Might Not You The rule of thumb with any sort of alternative shaving method (straight razor, double-edge safety razor, etc) is YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.Choosing the right shaving equipment is a very personal decision. Everyone's face and skin are different, and what works really well for one person- or even most people- might not necessarily work for you.Even if the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, one needs to know going in that its unlikely they will find the exact right equipment on the first go-round.Instead let the reviews guide you toward which equipment is /well-made/, then go from there in finding what works for you.--Backgound--I discovered DE (double edge) safety razor shaving after looking for a cheaper alternative to traditional cartridge razors. While they always gave me a nice clean shave, I always hated having to drop $4 per cartridge only to have it dull after a week. While helping a good friend clean out his grandfather's garage, I discovered a 1940's era Gillette razor in basically unused condition. He let me keep it. I took it home, and cleaned it to a nice shine. I then went and bought some Personna blades from the local Walgreens, and off I went. However, I found the handle on the Gillette too short for my liking, and combined with its weight made my fingers cramp. The combination of blade+razor also did shave as close as I would have liked. So I ordered some Feather blades (based off good reviews) as well a sampler package of different blades (definitely go this route starting out)I then went and ordered this. I was initially on the fence about going with an open comb or with a guard. But I figured if I didn't like the open comb, I could always go back to the old Gillette.--The Product--When I opened the package, I was really impressed. Its a really beautiful looking tool. It feels heavy enough to be substantial but light enough to be deft in one's hands. The finish work is really wonderful, and it looks and feels every bit the German-made tool that it is.It came with a blade that I didn't especially care for, but with the Personna blades it gave a nice smooth shave. It is definitely more aggressive than the old Gillette, and gets to the top lip hairs under my nose that the Gillette couldn't reach.--On Blades--When I finally received the Feathers and Sampler pack, I found that different blades were picky about which of the two razors I used. One giving a nice shave in the Merkur would be totally ineffective in the Gillette. (like the Personna)Or the reverse: one in the Gillette might give a smooth, comfortable shave but when in the Merkur would shred your face to a bloody mess. (the Feather was the worst offender, but could be controlled with a bit of practice)It was a nice bonus that the threads on the Merkur and Gillette both matched, so that I could use either head with the Merkur's long, comfortable handle, if I needed to.In the end I found that I generally preferred the Merkur. I also found that- much to my immense chagrin- the blades that paired best with it, lasted longest, and gave by fair the best shave, were the Gillettes I so wanted to avoid.--Conclusion--As I've said, you really can't go off rating alone when purchasing shaving gear, so I've tried to relay as much about my own experiences as possible to help you make an informed decision. My only piece of advice: if you don't already have a safety razor, you might want to start on one with a guard.Once you've got the technique down, you can get a more aggressive one if you decide you really need it.But in the end this is just me, and my advice will only get you so far. 5The Gateway razor that will get you hooked! A great basic shaver. This is a great second razor or a starter if just testing out wet shaving and don't want to lay out for a fancier razor. I got this for travel so I don't mind the shorter handle and lighter weight. It has great grip, is easy to clean and change the blade on. The finish and plating on mine looks better that the picture here. It is smooth but not quite as heavy or high quality chrome plating as the Muhle R109 that I have as my daily shaver. But that didn't stop me from getting a great shave. I do better with Feather blades rather than Merkur, but everyone has a different favorite. If you are curious, this is a great value and gives a good shave. For the price you can't go wrong. Paired up with a small travel steel bowl and travel brush, this makes a great compact travel kit for less than $50 and it will probably last a lifetime. If this is your starter, you will eventually enjoy shaving so much you will soon be looking at other models and makers to get a personal favorite. This is one of three that I own. Two are Merkur and I like each for different reasons. This one I would call my best all-rounder! 4A classic! The only shave that's closer than a safety razor shave is from an old-school straight-edge "cutthroat" razor. And I can speak from experience that those things are best left in the hands of professionals. Beware. This razor has a classic design, made of very high quality stainless steel, and is heftier than it looks. It's not a cheap knockoff - not in any way.I bought this along with a 100-count box of Personna double-edged blades (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0077LAJT2/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_11) and combined, it's a superb shave. Please note, gentlemen, that it's a lot harder to nick yourself with a razor like this. But your grandfather used one like this, and if it didn't make him look good, you wouldn't be here. Follow the logic. Finally, something that's not a complaint, just an observation. The handle on this razor is significantly shorter than the zillion-blade cartridge razor you're probably used to. See attached photo for comparison. That, combined with the weight of the steel, means you'll have a (short) period of adjustment. But you'll quickly learn that the short handle is intentional - you'll get better balance and control of the razor. If you want a classic shave, this is the way to go. I'm not saying this as post-icon retro hipsterism, but simply as a dude who enjoys a good, close shave. 5
