Customer Reviews

A seriously great beard balm I feel like I don't often review products - and when I do its usually due to a bad experience rather than a good one. But this time is different.I'd describe my beard as thick and coarse. While it may not be the beard of Viking legend or ZZ Top-esque, it is every bit as wild and unruly. I've specifically used waxes rather than balms because I just can't seem to control it otherwise. But the waxes tend to offer little in the way of conditioning my beard and keeping the skin beneath healthy as well. Then I tried Heavy-Duty Beard Balm by Mountaineer Brand. My beard is controlled, tamed, and conditioned. I am a customer for life. In fact, I told all my family and friends that several tins of this miracle were a must-have for me for Christmas 2018. 5Bulletproof beard Definitely works! I d say it s just a tad less thick/holding than mustache wax, lots of beeswax so nowhere near the consistency of their magic beard balm (which is my favorite beard balm of all time). Accidentally ordered original scent instead of my usual wv timber, doesn t smell bad, and if you like the smell of citrus fruits you ll love it but I still prefer the fir/cedar scent. Overall great product just like everything else from mountaineer that I have tried. 5 stars because it works great, even though I prefer their original magic beard balms consistency I need this heavy duty stuff to tame the beast. Highly recommend for anyone needing heavy duty/holding balm 5I WAS a frustrated shopper... I have been a frustrated shopper of beard products. If I'm going to wear whiskers, then I want and need them to look good. The wife wants me to look neat.I've been a fan of what a good Beard Oil can do for your beard. However, my whiskers are just coarse enough that they require more than just an oil provides to keep them tame and manly. Beard balm or beard wax. WHICH ONE???I'm sure you're like me and have several products that you have tried. Strength of hold. Smoothing power, sheen, grit or no, etc. Each of us is different, so let me tell you my story. I groom my whiskers to 3/4" all over, and I trip my lips to keep the whiskers from hanging over and on them. This grooming method allows for the really stiff ones to stand out - they are just long enough. Neither the wife or I like that. I have literally tried several brands of products - all purchased based upon reviews - that I THOUGHT would work.Balm Vs. Wax. - This definition isn't clear or easy. Yes there are mustache waxes that are very hard and very stiff. There are beard wax products that seem more like a lotiony balm. And there are balms that are more like a wax. How do you decide????!!!!????? How do you compare "strong" hold with "strong" hold. What I've learned... All products will make their way to the skin and will serve the purpose of minimizing itching, and conditioning and moisturizing the skin too. I've learned that "softening and conditioning" products do NOT remove the coarseness of facial hair...just ask my wife. HOWEVER, a well groomed beard makes you look dashing, suave, AND debonair. (And the wife doesn't mind the whiskers when you look good.)I have used the Honest Amish products. I have used Smooth Viking. I have used oils. I have used the Detroit brand of Beard Balm. Up until purchasing and using the Mountaineer Brand of Heavy Duty Balm, I had most consistently used the Detroit Heavy Duty Beard Balm. What I like about Mountaineer Brand and what YOU will like about Mountaineer Brand - The first ingredient is beeswax. (Beeswax is what actually gives the holding power. So if you need taming, wax is NECESSARY. If you want a fluffy anything goes look, an oil or balm may be better for you.) I love the citrusy, earthy, lime and pine smell. It's a subtle reminder that you are a man's man, and you care enough to use a product that highlights your manliness - like you've just crashed your way through a grove of juniper and balsam - Not really. It is subtle yet wonderful.Technique - I use the back of my fingernail scraped against the balm to get a large "pea" size. I then transfer that to my palm and rub them back and forth to soften and liquefy the balm. I then go straight to my face applying to my problem areas first - from the top down - I'll explain later. I start with my chin and then my mustache, and finally my sideburns. You will read how some companies say to start at the roots and work your way out... maybe for those who have a LONG beard. I rub it on from TOP DOWN and then IMMEDIATELY use a fine toothed comb to work the balm into the whiskers, combing over and over and over until uniformly covered. This technique actually does get the balm down to the roots and onto my skin. It also allows for initial shaping, and by experience, whether I need to apple a little more product to look wonderful. Yes, it can get a little thickly applied in areas, but working it with the comb spreads and evens out the product and I haven't had any problem making it look spectacular.LASTLY - I recommend that you purchase a 100% horse hair brush. You can easily spend $40 for a good brush, or you can do what I did. Probably all of us that care about our manliness also polish our shoes. Go to your local discount store and buy a shoe polish buffing brush. For about $5 you will get a superior quality brush. You already know how to use it. Give your whiskers that last shaping and buff with your horse hair brush and you're ready to go. It's worth it. You'll look like the man that you are.The Detroit Heavy Beard Balm would be my second choice - based upon texture and hold. But, I really like the Mountaineer Brand Heavy Duty Balm. Anything worth doing is worth doing well - and a great product helps to make you more wonderful than you already are. Enjoy! I do. :-) 5So for those wanting something that will tame and beastly beared I can recommend this product I will say this product worked as advertised it tamed the Beast that is my thick corse beared that other balms could not touch and I did not have any problems with the smell. I would normally give it 5 stars however I seam to be severly allergic to one of the items in it as it caused me to itch break out and blister in places. As such I used it once andcan not use it again. So while I can't use it, it dose not mean others can't. As I said before the one time I used it it worked exceptionally well as advertised. So for those wanting something that will tame and beastly beared I can recommend this product.Dose it have a sent? Yes it dose as do all beared balms I've come across. Is the sent bad? To me know I did not find it unpleasant. Some people might but to each their own as everyone is different.Would I recommend this product to those with large and unruly beards that many a balm can't tame? You bet I would.I will not be buying this product again as I said before there is something in it that I'm alergic too but I recommend that others give it a shot. 4Broke out in a rash The product seems to be of good quality, I wouldn't say it has a weird smell but the smell is quite different to say the least, cant really pin point what or if it smells like anything. Now to the important part....Unfortunately I used it once and immediately within hours broke out with a red patchy rash on my chin area with my skin actually flaking off the next day, I read the ingredients and to my knowledge I am not allergic to any of them, kind of sucks though bought it and now it is just sitting there unused because I don't want to risk breaking out again. I have used many other beard balms and had no such reaction like I did with this one, for example, Honest Amish, Grave Before Shave, Etc. Just throwing that in there to rule out any what ifs.Just be weary. 2Heavily scented Firstly.... If you're looking for an unscented balm, this one is NOT for you. It does have a fairly potent smell that does linger. It's not unpleasant, but strong enough that I can detect it for hours.Second, it is a beeswax type of balm... It's packed in the tin very hard. If you've never used this, dig in to the puck with the back of your thumbnail, then rub your palms together till it amalgamates. It only takes a few seconds till it's usable.Lastly, It isn't a very thick balm, so in my opinion it's not the best for styling ones beard. It does do a nice job conditioning and softening mine. Combs through easily.I've used balms for my chest length beard for years. This one is priced reasonably, does a decent job of softening and preventing split ends... Just has that potent scent.BTW, customer service is awesome if you have any questions or issues. 4What's not to love about any Mountaineer Brand product What's not to love about any Mountaineer Brand product? This was the third beard product I bought from them. The tamer smells of sweet sage if you want to have a more gentlemanly smell rather than a woodsman smell. It gives your beard a nice hold throughout the day but is less so on very humid days (for which the product shouldn't be blamed). On those days, I switch to oil. This tin will last you for a long time. Per the directions, you scrape a little with your fingernail and rub it together in your fingertips until it melts, and then you smooth it into your beard. I use a little more than directed because my hair is thick. Using this every day, it should last for around six months. 5Great product. I have a a roughly 6" full beard and work in a corporate setting, so my struggle lies within the fine line of keeping my glorious Freedom Fur, and simultaneously looking like a "Professional". I have spent a lot of $$ going through beard products to help me accomplish this mission and walk that beast/businessman line. For less than 6 dollars this balm is as good or better than most of its competition which run twice this price. I use roughly a nickle amount and coat the topside of my beard post shower, before work and this balm works great at keeping my Irish Pendents (fly-aways) in line. I think it smells good; warning: the scent lasts. Over-all if there were a 4 1/2 star option, I'd have given this balm that. The 1/2 star deduction is only due to the effort it takes to scrape the balm out and rub it into a usable viscous product. I will probably be buying a few more before this company realizes that it could easily mark this product up a few dollars, and still sell it. Bravo Zulu to this brand, though, for keeping it real and affordable. 4Works great and smells great! I have been growing out my beard recently and noticed that it was needing something to shape it and help tame the wild hairs especially the grey ones. I also use conditioner in my beard after shampooing, I never use bar soap, it will cause dry skin and beard. My beard actually needs more care than the hair on my head! This product has performed the job of taming my wild beard admiraly. I love the mild pleasing scent and the way it moisturizes my beard. I highly recommend this product and I'm not getting paid to do this review, when something that is advertised to perform a function that really works I feel obligated to share my experience. Hope this helps! 5It works and doesn't have a strong scent. I've tried the heavy duty Honest Amish and this holds way better and smells better. It has a slight pine scent but nothing to strong at all. I've tried about six other different brands of scented beard balms and they were all way stinkier than this. If you read the one and two star reviews you'd have to think they've shaved their beards off by now and are crying in a corner somewhere. It's not hard to scrape off with your thumb and you just rub your hands together for a bit like any other beard balm or wax. I've finally found a Heavy Duty Balm that holds this mess altogether and I no longer have to keep buying and trying. Happy Bearding! 5
